Is this program for you?

The Gap Year Program in Montreal is suited to the student who is looking for a high-quality language immersion program in one of Canada's most 'European' cities! The program is ideal for students who want to combine daily French language classes with afternoons, evenings and weekends that are free to join optional activities and excursions or spend time exploring Montreal on their own, with their host family or with new friends. The program is intended for students who are independent, have some travel experience, are comfortable taking public transit, are used to time away from family and are able to effectively manage and advocate for themselves in new and unfamiliar situations. Please see the About Mature Teen and Gap Year Programs page for more information.

Location

Set on an island in the St. Lawrence River, Montreal is the largest bilingual city in the world, where French and English cultures meet and mingle. Montreal offers visitors a lively nightlife, impressive museums, theatres and concert halls as well as thousands of restaurants and bistros to please every pallette! Montreal is considered by many to be Canada's fashion capital with elegant boutiques and numerous shopping complexes. The city even features an 'underground city' that includes a 30 km network of hotels, apartments, restaurants, cinemas, theatres boutiques and major department stores, all linked together by a clean and efficient metro system.

It has an extremely attractive city centre, ideal for walking, featuring the largest number of 17-19th century buildings in North America. Old Montreal and the Old Port will charm you with cobblestone streets and horsedrawn carriages and, if you want to stay active, you'll be enticed by the over 600 km of bicycle paths that criss-cross this unique island city.  Famous sites include the majestic Notre dame Basilica, Saint Joseph's Oratory, the Place des Arts complex, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as well as the Biodome and Olympic Stadium.

If you want to venture farther afield, the Laurentian Mountains and Mont Tremblant are all easy day trips as are Quebec City and Ottawa, Canada's capital.

Activities of note include: the Montreal Grand Prix (Jun), the Montreal Jazz Festival (Jun/Jul), the Just for Laughs Festival (Jul), the NHL - Montreal Canadiens (Sep to Apr) and Skiing at Mont Tremblant (Nov to Mar).

French Courses

The program offers an ideal mix of French lessons with ample free time to explore Montreal with new friends. See the schedule page for more information. It also offers the unique opportunity to meet and make friends with students from all over Europe, Latin America and Asia, making this a very popular program for students who are looking for an international experience. Depending on how intensive you want to make your studies, you can choose 20 (standard) or 25 (intensive) or 30 (super-intensive) lessons per week.
